Long-term studies show that burst pipes remain undetected in the ground an average of 100 days.
We have to deal carefully with fresh water and a regular inspection of the pipeline system is essential. Geodynamic changes in the soil can cause various types of water losses. A significant increase of consumption is not always the result, even small losses add up.
The one-time inspection of a pipe network may indeed reduce the water losses in the short term, but as burst pipes and other leaks occur in the pipe network constantly, a long-term reduction of water losses is only to achieve in conjunction with ongoing monitoring. WCS – Water Control Systems® is a modular remote monitoring system for water supply systems, sewage, wastewater treatment plants, district heating plants and the environmental industry.
Recording dynamical values and static state inquiries it is suitable for permanent monitoring in order to avoid expensive water losses.
PRINCIPLE
In general sound is used for the detection of leaks in water pipe networks. A damaged area creates pressure waves that are carried away in the water column. The waves propagate sinusoidally from the water column. Wherever the waves hit the pipe material, this is caused to vibrate. The further the pressure waves continue, the weaker they become. There is a point, where the waves in the water column no longer set the pipe material into oscillation.
At this point, no structure-borne noise will be heard anymore. Of course the type of soil, its compaction, the pipe material, operating pressure, pipe diameter and a few other factors may influence the result.
METHODS
A basic distinction may be made between zone measurement, pre-location and pinpointing. Depending on local needs and conditions the optimal appropriate method of measurement will be chosen.

TEST ROD AQUA M50 D
Aqua M-50D is used for pre-locating leakages in water supply systems. The noise analyser is so sensitive that even the smallest leakages can be detected. Due to its integrated level display the intensity of the leakage noise can be determined objectively.

GAS CHECK H2
H2-Method for searching mini leaks
With the Gas-Check-H2 even tiny little leakages can be pinpointed. Hydrogen diffuses through almost any material due to its molecular size. The pipeline section to be checked is filled entirely with gas, and the pressure is increased slowly until the measurement varies according to the size of the leakage, the kind of soil, and the surface structure. The leakage on the pipeline will be below the the spot showing the highest concentration of gas. Usually the location indicated by gasCheck does not deviate by more than a few centimetres from the actual leakage location.
